How We Address Chimney Masonry Repairs

What Are Some Common Chimney Repairs?

A chimney and fireplace system is very complex and there are many things that can become damaged over time. Luckily, some of them are very minor fixes if caught early enough.

Chimney ReliningIf your chimney has a clay tile liner, it is likely that at some point it will need to be replaced or repaired. Clay tile liners are very susceptible to fracture from the constant heating and cooling of the chimney. Without a properly functioning chimney liner, your chimney’s masonry will take on the brunt of the temperature changes, which will cause cracking and spalling of the mortar and masonry. Additionally, damage will occur as a result of the combustion byproducts deposited on the exposed masonry. Is your clay tile liner in bad shape? Chimney relining and repair is much cheaper than an entire chimney rebuild! Learn more about chimney liner options here.

Masonry Re-pointingThis is a process that resolves masonry damage issues. As a chimney is battered by wind, rain, snow, and temperature changes, the mortar that holds the bricks or stones together can crack, chip, and fall apart. These small cracks and chips can cause big problems if left unchecked. Luckily, it is a rather small repair process if caught early on, and our masons have the skills to do the job right! Your chimney will look as good as new when we are finished! Read more about re-pointing here.

How Can I Tell If I Have A Problem?

An annual chimney inspection is a great way to make sure you stay on top of any problems that may arise in your chimney system and to make sure you identify them before they become bigger issues. With that being said, there are some warning signs to look for:

  • Smoke entering your living area while burning a fire
  • Smoky or moldy odor coming from your fireplace
  • A dripping sound in your chimney
  • Water in your firebox
  • Stains on the outside of the chimney
  • Cracked or crumbling masonry
  • Water damage on the ceiling around your chimney

If you notice any of these problems, it is best to call a CSIA-certified chimney sweep sooner rather than later.
