All About Re-pointing
Re-pointing goes by many names — tuckpointing, pointing, spot pointing, etc. — but no matter the name, it is essentially the process of replacing damaged mortar joints in masonry structures to add strength and prevent water from getting in. While it may seem like a minor repair, the benefits can be huge – especially when you consider the role mortar joints play in the structural integrity, appearance, and water-resistance of a structure!
Damaged Masonry Can Have Far-Reaching Consequences
Whether mortar is used between stone, brick, or blocks, it’s imperative that it stays in great condition. Here are some things you have to worry about when mortar cracks and crumbles:
Water Intrusion – When mortar joints are damaged, water can seep into the masonry. As that moisture freezes and thaws, it expands and contracts, forming cracks and compromising both the look and the strength of the masonry. Before long, you could be faced with mold growth, further water damage, and even a chimney collapse if left unchecked. That is why it is so important to take care of the problem as soon as possible!
Compromised Structural Integrity – If the mortar incurs enough damage, it can cause the chimney structure to weaken. Water-damaged bricks tend to spall, which essentially renders them unsafe and unusable. As this happens, the chimney becomes more and more vulnerable and affected by house settling and heavy winds. In time, this could cause the chimney to partially or completely collapse, leading to extensive damage, expensive rebuilds, and unnecessary risk.
A Home For Bugs! – Damaged and missing mortar joints create ideal places for insects, spiders, and other creepy crawlies to make a home. Many of these bugs can be a nuisance and cause further damage to your home. Wasps and hornets like to make nests in these protected crevices high off the ground. All it takes is a stiff wind to knock these nests to the ground and cause a dangerous swarm that you want nowhere near your home!
