What is a Chimney Liner?
The chimney liner is a barrier that lines the inside of the chimney.
It has three main functions:
- Protects the House from Heat.
Without a liner to serve as a refractive barrier, the high heat from the fireplace transfers from the chimney. This weakens and warps building materials and can lead to a fire! - Protects the Masonry from Corrosion.
The byproducts of combustion can eat away at brick and mortar, allowing heat and smoke to escape into the home. Damage to the masonry can also cause structural damage to the chimney and home. The chimney liner is designed to withstand this type of chemical abuse. In addition, it will protect your chimney when installed properly and maintained regularly. - Keeps the Air Moving.
What if the chimney is too tall to properly vent a certain appliance? A liner can be installed that properly funnels the smoke and carbon monoxide, without allowing it to come into the home. A Liner Problem
Over time the liner may become damaged. Also, an old liner (particularly clay tile liners) can become worn out and begin to chip away. You can detect a liner problem if you find pieces of clay tile in the fireplace – or if the surface of the chimney is excessively hot.
